Running the Comrades Ultramarathon to Support the Indigenous Marathon Foundation

Story

Comrades is the world's largest and oldest ultramarathon, following an 87 kilometre course from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Founded by South African veterans after World War I, it has a strict 12 hour cutoff, after which the race is closed. The spirit of Comrades is said to be embodied by values of camaraderie, selflessness, dedication, perseverance, and 'ubuntu' (humanity).

On Sunday 11 June 2023, I will be running Comrades as a supporter of Rob de Castella's Indigenous Marathon Foundation. I've done dozens of races as an Indigenous Marathon Foundation supporter, including the six World Marathon Majors, and an ironman triathlon. But this race is special, because its values are so closely aligned with the values of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation.

Each year, the Foundation takes a dozen young Indigenous men and women, and trains them to run a marathon. This takes perseverance and dedication, builds camaraderie and selflessness, and connects them even more deeply with our shared humanity. Indigenous Marathon Foundation graduates are encouraged to establish 'Deadly Fun Runs' to improve healthy living in their communities.

I'm hoping you'll make a donation to support the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. All gifts are tax deductible, and every little bit helps their vital work. I'll be personally covering all my own costs for the race, and donations made through this page go directly to the Indigenous Marathon Foundation.
